Bastich's blog
Topic: My say
I have created a new blog at www.Blogger.com, it's called Bastich's blog. I'm not sure if I'm going to abandon this blog outright. Tripod has really been a good host to me but it's time to move on to another site. This will definitely be a big move, since I have no audience in Blogger, the new site is not even listed in Google so I may need to promote it like crazy just to get listed. I may update this blog, but I will definitely update the new Blogger site. Updates like anime/manga, comics, free software, roms, and the rest will be updated on the new site.

You can visit Bastich's blog here.

Man, this is stoopid
Mood:  accident prone
Topic: My say
So it started out as a boring day--I was surfing the web, reading manga, eating popcorn, the usual stuff--when I decided to tweak this blog's template a bit. I tried out 4 or 5 templates and I of course saved the source code of the original template. After trying some templates, I decided to restore the original template I made for this site...but...I can't restore it no matter what I do. In short, I broke it.

That's the reason for this new look, which doesn't look half-bad except that--it doesn't look dark or misty by any means. Anyway, I kind of like this look that I'll probably keep it, maybe until I find the energy to fix my old source code.

On another note. If you like Japanese comics, or manga as we learned individuals call it, then direct your browsers to Direct manga forums to learn more about mangas and meet fellow enthusiasts. I hang out there once in a while, my handle is Bastich.

That's it for now. And no, I'm not calling this site Blue Bubbly Realm!

Ckmoney for mangas
Topic: Anime/Manga
SileNTReApR said in the Direct manga forums that http://www.ckmoney.com

Huge manga database, currently IRC only, but we are setting up the HTTP server now, and it will be ready soon.

I should say the IRC database probably has more manga than directmanga..we'll see (sic)

Update: Looks like their http servers are up. Warning, manga overload.

Firefox is the next target
Mood:  lucky
Topic: Tech
Click here to read a Cnet article about the popularity of Firefox.

This is the reason why Opera is my primary browser and Firefox is only my back-up. Firefox's popularity will only make it the next target of malware and virus writers. When I'm right, I'm dead right.

Treepad de-lite
Mood:  energetic
Topic: Tech
Treepad lite is already a popular freeware application, but I just can't help myself from having a review of my own 'coz this app really helped me organize my messy thoughts.

The version I will review is Treepad lite 2.9.5, here's the low-down from the read me text:

Program name: TreePad Lite

Program description: TreePad Lite is a free and easy to use database program, a powerful information organizer, PIM and outline text editor. It is ideal for storing notes, emails, URLs. It features extended search, edit, export and import options. Supports non-western fonts through IME mode.

Program License: Freeware
Runs on: Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, NT, XP
Version: 2.9.5
Date: July 06, 2002
Program homepage: http://www.treepad.com
Size: 425 Kb
Automatic install: yes, optional
Manual install: yes, optional
Author: Henk Hagedoorn
Company: Freebyte!
Company homepage: http://www.freebyte.com
Support: http://www.treepad.com/support

Here's a screen of how I use Treepad lite to organize this site:

As you can see, Treepad looks and feels just like Windows Explorer. It's very easy to use, so novice PC users need not worry. The screenshot also shows that I have categorized everything I have for this blog, after which I just write away any idea, to do lists, and save the URLs that I may need in the future.

The tree structure above is free form, which means that you can do any hierarchical list that you need. This makes Treepad versatile to use as a Diary, Personal Information Manager(PIM), Thesis organizer, or any note taking chores you can think of. This app can even fit in a floppy disk, so you can use all your notes or databases in any place that has a PC.

Oishii is del.icio.us
Mood:  lazy
Topic: Web links
Oishii is a website that gathers the most popular links from the del.icio.us site. If you don't know what del.icio.us is, it's simply a site where people can share their favorite bookmarks to the public.

Oishii takes the most popular bookmarks on the frontpage of del.icio.us and updates it in it's site every 15 minutes. This makes it easy for people to view what sites are the most bookmarked in the web.

Oh yeah, I found Oishii in Kevin Pereria's blog.

Apps for reading manga scans
Mood:  vegas lucky
Topic: Anime/Manga
Since manga should be read on real paper and not on a computer screen, here are some applications you can use to make reading scanlations a lot easier and fun. The next best thing to paper.

Here's some forum threads on how people like you and me view their manga:

1. Animesuki manga forum

2. Animepaper manga forum

I used some of the apps mentioned above, and here's my review to some of them:

1. Acdsee

Pros: This is the best general veiwer for images, very fast to booth. It has the all important zip and rar support, so you don't need to unzip your manga, just click and read on.

Cons: It is too bulky, bloated, and not really designed to read comics. It's not free.

2. Infranview

Pros: This is the best and fastest freeware image viewing application that is just a notch or two inferior to Acdsee. Free.

Cons: Does not support zip or rar archives. Since it's like Acdsee, it's also not really made to view comics/manga, so it's as awkward as Acdsee.

3. CDisplay

Pros: This app is specially made for reading scanned comics. It has zip, rar, and ace support. It has auto resizing of images to fit the height or width of your screen. Free.

Cons: It has bare bones interface that turned me off. Just note that a lot of people likes the no interface look, so it's just a matter of taste.

4. PicWalker

Pros: Fast all-around image viewer in the vain of Infranview. It has also an auto-bookmark function that is useful if you are reading comics and have to stop to do something else. Zip, rar, and ace support completes the package. Free.

Cons: It has problems (it does not display the comic) with archives that has other contents aside from images, like the text files to identify the scanlators of a particular title.

5. ComicsViewer [note: the site is in Chinese (or Jap maybe?) so if your browser (like mine) does not support these characters you will see some gibberish. This is not a big problem just click here for the english version of the app]

Pros: For me, this is the best manga veiwer of all. It has zip and rar support. It has a cool resizing engine that does not compromise the quality of the images. It has auto-bookmarking functions as well as manual bookmarking. It simply has a lot of functions to make your comics reading a pleasure. Try it dammit! Free.

Cons: The manual and help files are in Chinese (or Jap?), but if you have half a brain you don't need any help working this one out.

And that ends my round-up. Just note that this is not an exhaustive list, if you use other viewers then please leave your comment below.

Manga news
Mood:  happy
Topic: Anime/Manga
If you are new to manga scanlations then check out Manga News for an extensive database of licensed and unlicensed manga in their site. They have news of what titles are licensed or unlicensed, they have a full list of manga reviews, links to scanlators, and links to MIRC or HTTP so you can get your hands on a copy of the hottest unlicensed manga. This site is huge--5/5!

State of this blog's address
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: My say
It has been six months putting work on this blog, it's a fun six months, I have an average of 27 hits a day, 17 unique visitors a day, and an average of 2 returning visitors a day. This blog has become my homepage for everything that I like to share with people. I hope this year will be as fun as last year. I may not be able to put much work in this site as much 'coz I'll be out job hunting again (heh, I need the money too y'know, my savings are not infinite).

Anyway, I have more than 2000 hits so far--not much, but I'm proud of it. In the coming months I plan to review freeware games, I also want to review unlicensed manga scanlations--but--nothing definite yet, I need to do this stuff after I find a new job--not that it'll get me away from the net, that's impossible, but I would be spending my time reading other sites more than posting here.

Happy new year again and I wish the best for everyone of my imaginary readers.

Update: Looks like people visiting this site has not wised up yet...

Browsers used to view this blog:
1. Internet Explorer--85% (whoa!)
2. Firefox--10% (what?)
3. Opera, Safari, Netscape, Mozilla--1%

Guys, viruses are rampant in the net. Stop using IE.

Gameboy Advance roms
Topic: Emulation
This is an updated re-post.

Are you still looking for that Grand Theft Auto, Yu-gi-oh, Final Fantasy, The Sims, Lord Of The Rings, or that elusive Kingdom Hearts rom? Here's some site that you might want to check out for GBA roms:

Roms Web-log -- It's a blog about GBA roms. They have downloads and links to other sites with GBA roms.

White Wings -- A GBA rom site with the latest GBA games. You need to register to d/l. (I fixed the link, it's now working fine)

Huge list of GBA rom resources -- A lot of links here.

LastEnd -- Another GBA rom download site.

Games2Play -- This site closed without warning, it may just be down for the moment or closed forever. (Still no word from this site)

That's all folks.

You want Dawn of souls rom
Mood:  spacey
Topic: Emulation
Dec. 25 update: I might not be able to post any updates this holiday season, just go check out the comments under this post for a great tip by Samureye on where to get the GBA roms you need.

You can post any tip on any of the the topics here.

Another update: Looks like a lot of GBA rom sites has closed shop. If you want to obtain this rom I suggest you get Shareaza , a P2P client that can connect to Bit Torrent, eDonkey, and Gnutella. Happy hunting![a friend told me he got the english rom from Shareaza. He's currently playing it on an emulator before going out to buy it for his GBA]

November 13 update: Sorry guys, the link to the Japanese rom is no longer active. Still a lot of people searching for an english translation, if you are one of them, you are a fucking moron. If you still want the Japanese rom, try the 2 pay sites Emuchina and Edge emu below.

Holy rom update, Batman! - The link to Final Fantasy 1&2: Dawn of Souls (Jap) rom is right here . Get it now before the site disappears from the internet again.

I wasn't about to post an update today, but due to a very large number of people visiting this site because of Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls post I did, well, I still don't have a free link for it, not even the Japanese version. But I do have 2 sites that I suspect have the Japanese rom, the problem is that you need to pay to get to their members only site. Well if you're that desperate to get the rom, here's the links:

1. Emuchina - has tons of roms and ISO's for even the latest consoles and handhelds.

2. Edge Emulation - Also has a GBA pay section, but I'm not 100% sure.

That's it for now.
